Juniper

Juniper

Junipers are coniferous plants in the genus Juniperus /dʒuːˈnɪpərəs/[1] of the cypress family Cupressaceae. Depending on taxonomic viewpoint, between 50 and 67 species of juniper are widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic, south to tropical Africa, from Ziarat, Pakistan east to eastern Tibet in the Old World, and in the mountains of Central America. The highest-known Juniper forest occurs at an altitude of 16,000 feet (4,900 m) in south-eastern Tibet and the northern Himalayas, creating one of the highest tree-lines on earth.

Pruning Bonsai

The most important thing you can do to style your bonsai tree is pruning. This can range from removing leaves to major branch or structural pruning. It is also possible to use pruning to promote directional growth.

Wiring Bonsai

Since the end of World War II, most bonsai styling has been done by wiring. Aluminum wire is cheap and easy to bend. You must be careful to make sure that wire is not allowed to dig in as the tree grows.

Bonsai defoliation

This is a rather radical process that takes place in the summer. All of the leaves are removed during the growing season, forcing the tree to grow new leaves. This will generally create smaller leaves with great plant ramification.

Deadwood on Bonsai

Creating deadwood on bonsai is one of the best ways to make a tree look older. There are two major classes: jins which reflect a broken branch and shari which is removing the bark on a trunk giving the effect of a lighting strike or die back.

Surface roots (Nebari)

Nebari, or root flare, is a great way to age a tree by showing roots above ground.  This can be done by pruining or layer younger plants.

Bonsai trunk

The trunk of a Bonsai should naturally tapper as it goes upward. This can be done by pruining or by trunk splitting.

Bonsai Branch Bender

Bonsai Branch Bender

This bender is very helpful as you become more advanced in bonsai. This tool is very adjustable and will easily handle tree trunks up to an inch. They are very low priced and can be left in place. I did a short demo video on this bender. Watch the Bonsai Branch Bender demo video.

Bonsai Leaves Branch Shears

For a smaller hand, the best pair of shears is Bonsai Leaves Branch Shears. The smaller opening allow the user greater control and the length allows you to reach deep inside a plant and clip interior leafs and branches.
